Isamu Taniguchi built this “Oriental Garden” when he was 70, stone by stone, over a period of 18 months. It was opened to the public in 1969. Since then, the Stone Gates (a gift from Austin, Texas’ sister city in Japan, Oita) and the Teahouse have been added to the landscape. Taniguchi-san hoped that this garden would inspire a desire for universal peace.

You can visit the Isamu Taniguchi Japanese Garden at the Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, Texas.
